The vines response to the laying down of one cane instead of two has been to grow quite a few canes from the crown of each vine foremother than the one year old wood left for that purpose. Keep in mind that fruitful canes grown only from one year old wood, so the extras, adventitious shoots, amount to clutter that could lead to disease by limiting the access of preventive sprays.
It’s hard work, as these canes (shoots)have to be removed by hand, making sure that those with flowers are the ones that should be kept. The callouses on my fingers and thumbs bare evidence of this activity.
I am really excited about this season and so far, so good!
